Saurabh R.  Popat

Saurabh is an alumnus (1998) of the MHA program at the Telfer School of Management. Currently the national Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy for Baxter Corporation (Canada). He joined in 2007 and is responsible for developing, leading and executing comprehensive government affairs and public policy strategies for Baxter in the Canadian region. He also represents Canada on the global government affairs leadership team. Previous to Baxter, Saurabh was the Director of Public Affairs and Communications for the Ontario Pharmacists’ Association (OPA). He joined the OPA in October 2005 with management responsibilities for the communications group, government and stakeholder relations, and as a key member of the Executive Management Team. In this role, Saurabh was instrumental in advocating for OPA’s interests with the Government of Ontario during the development and implementation of the Transparent Drug System for Patients Act (Bill 102). Saurabh also managed important public policy issues impacting the pharmacy profession and the profile of the OPA, including cross-border reimportation of prescription drugs, and public opinion of pharmacists in Ontario. Saurabh joined the OPA after serving as Senior Policy Advisor on Transformation, to Ontario’s Minister of Health and Long Term Care, the Honorable George Smitherman. He joined the Minister’s office in October 2004, to help with the implementation of the transformation agenda, which included the Wait Times Strategy, Family Health Teams, Local Health Integration Networks and Information Management. Prior to this, Saurabh was an integral part of the Public Affairs team at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). He started his career with GSK as their Health Policy Analyst in 2001, working on a number of health policy issues, initiatives and strategies. Thereafter, he was promoted to the role of Stakeholder and External Affairs Manager for Ontario in 2002, where he helped develop and lead GSK’s strategy on external advocacy support focused on the business objectives of various therapeutic areas including, diabetes, respiratory health and vaccines, and outreach with government. Saurabh began his professional career in the pharmaceutical industry in 1998, joining Eli Lilly Canada as their Senior Provincial and Professional Affairs Associate, responsible for developing and coordinating public and private payor reimbursement strategy across Canada for all marketed products. Saurabh graduated from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Renal Physiology in 1995 and is also a graduate of the distinguished International Baccalaureate Program that he completed in 1991.
