We Grow Together
Christine Kincaid — 2017 Dean’s Philos Award
I must admit that I’m a little shy about receiving such an honour. Not that I don’t appreciate it. It’s just that giving to my family, work and community is so important to me and, therefore, so right to me that it doesn’t feel like giving at all. I do it so my kids can enjoy fulfilling lives, so my colleagues can succeed and our clients prosper, and so my community can be even healthier. When they all thrive, I thrive. We grow together.
That same thinking inspires my connection with the Telfer School. Yes, I’m a Telfer BCom grad, but my motivation goes far beyond merely being an alumna. I’ve reached the point in my life and career that, while I keep looking ahead with curiosity and enthusiasm, I’m also looking back to find ways to help students, this valuable institution and other worthwhile community organizations develop. It’s not pure altruism or even giving back. Serving on the Dean’s advisory board, being a Telfer School mentor and doing pro bono work for local groups also makes me a better person and professional. We grow together.
This approach keeps a Telfer School education continually relevant and meaningful to all graduates—whether you completed your studies 35 years ago—like me—or just five. For those just starting out in your careers, it may be hard to see how you can directly influence your organization’s success. That’s when you should seek out volunteer opportunities, so you can apply the skills you learned at Telfer to help the world around you thrive. Whether you’re an old pro or a fresh face, each of us has something meaningful to offer others. We grow together.
