Seeing the Bigger Picture
Justine Hendricks — Trudeau Medal recipient
People say I’m passionate about everything I do. My response: Guilty as charged! But passion alone isn’t going to get the job done right—whatever that job is. If you really want to make a difference at work and in life, if you truly want to improve on the status quo, you need to see the bigger picture. What exactly does that mean? It means taking advantage of a variety of experiences to learn, and then using what you learn to uncover new possibilities that lead to a greater good—whether it’s for one person or an entire country.
The Telfer MBA made it possible for me to see the bigger picture and recognize its importance. The beauty of the program isn’t the three letters you put at the end of your name. It’s the experiences you get. For me, the experiences were the learning. They equipped me with the perspective to channel my passion in ways that make the greatest impact. Gaining that clarity has paid off for me. I’ve since been involved in many meaningful projects and I’ve enjoyed a steady rise—learning all the way.
Experiences are meant to be shared. So I serve as a member of the Dean’s advisory board and I’m a regular speaker at Telfer MBA classes. I especially enjoy talking with students. And not only Telfer students. As a graduate of a youth program called Forum for Young Canadians and now as chair of its board, I host and speak with 300 future leaders of Canada annually. The gathering enables them to learn about the impact of Canada in the world as they prepare themselves to embrace their roles as leaders in and of this country. I encourage them not to be complacent. Don’t be content with the status quo. Things can be better. Open your eyes wide to the possibilities that are out there. Then seize them to make lives better.
