The Leadership Equation
Bryan Belanger — Trudeau Medal recipient
Nothing excites me more than facing a great business challenge. To me, there’s no truer test of one's leadership than when you help create, motivate and support your team to perform at their absolute best. Leading them to realize their full potential, overcoming challenges, reach ambitious goals, and watch them grow and prosper as individuals gives me a tremendous sense of accomplishment. And, most importantly, doing it in an authentic and compassionate manner. These activities have led to my own successful leadership equation. It’s a pattern of behaviour that’s central to who I am as an executive and as a person.
The Telfer EMBA equipped me to think and act in this way. As one of the youngest-ever graduates of the program, I enjoyed a unique advantage. I was in a prime position to tap into the wisdom of an entire group of seasoned business veterans. I was able to cultivate not only friendships, but also mentors who have helped me grow as a leader. I was also exposed to real-world learning that prepared me to travel confidently around the world—Asia, Australia, Europe and throughout the United States. And as someone from the high-tech world, I was immersed in many other core aspects of modern organizations; sales, marketing, finance, logistics—all which helped round out my overall business acumen.
This range of teaching and mentorship inspired and quickly launched me into the executive ranks. It also embedded in me that leadership determinism, which I try to instil in others, especially when I return to the Telfer School to talk to prospective students. I say: find what has the most meaning to you, surround yourself with amazing people, set the example by working hard and selflessly, and strive for successes that benefit others beyond you alone. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing my team succeed. It fuels my drive and passion. Care for what you do, trust in your team, believe in yourself and remember—life is what you make of it, so why not make it amazingly meaningful?
