Kathleen Kemp, BCom
Director, Sector Development, Centre for Social Entrepise Development - Ottawa, ON, Canada

Kathleen Kemp

Kathleen Kemp graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the Telfer School in 2015. During her studies, Kathleen was a member of Enactus uOttawa. In 2015, after years of hard work, Kathleen and her team were proud and honoured to be named the Enactus Canada National Champions. Being able to represent the School, the city and the country on a global stage is an experience she will never forget and will always cherish. Her time with Enactus gave her the opportunity to be a better leader and taught her about people and leveraging business for the benefit of the community.

In 2013, while pursuing her studies at Telfer, Kathleen founded CigBins, a social enterprise with the goal of diverting harmful cigarette butt waste from the environment and providing meaningful employment to individuals in the Ottawa area with a mental illness. The company launched in 2014. Kathleen currently works at the Centre for Social Enterprise Development as one of the Directors of Sector Development. In June 2016, she won the inaugural GenNext Community Builder of the Year Award by United Way Ottawa, which led her to being one of the Co-Chairs for United Way Ottawa’s Community Campaign. In addition to her day job, Kathleen is currently working on opening a new company, which will be launching later in 2017.

What matters to Kathleen is using business for the greater good. She said that she learned through firsthand experience at Telfer that there are many ways to shape a better community: through entrepreneurship or intrapreneurship, private, public or non-profit sectors. Inspired by people doing incredible work within the community, Kathleen strives to not only do better in her career but also be a better member of the community. For her, this means participating in causes she believes in, being involved in initiatives that support community economic development and challenging herself to start new things that push the envelope on social issues.
