Jason Yeung, BCom
Director/Co-Founder, Crossfire Arena - Quarry Bay, China

Jason Yeung

In 2010, at the end of completing his BCom with a specialization in Finance, Jason Yeung was awarded “Highest Achievement in Finance” at his Convocation. Little did he know that four years later, he would become a co-owner of a start-up company in Hong Kong named Crossfire Arena, a corporate team building and social sports “Playground” as he calls it, organizing activities like Archery Tag, Bubble Soccer, Darts and many more. “We grew from a mobile operator of Archery Tag games to a full service team building/event planner with a fixed venue. I had no idea the business would turn out this way if I was asked even one year ago. It is full of surprises and challenges,” he says.

Jason, originally from Hong Kong, decided to come to study at the Telfer School of Management for its strong curriculum in management and finance, exposure to English speaking and French speaking student bodies, and the high level of student involvement in extracurricular activities. He admits that his fondest memories from his time at Telfer were participating in the TD Securities Case Competition as well as Omnium Finance in his final year: “Both competitions were great experiences that pushed me out of my comfort zone by applying academic knowledge and working as a cohesive team under pressure against other top schools nationally,” he says.

After graduation, Jason went on to complete an internship on the trading floor of TD Securities in Toronto, however, what he really wanted was to return home and explore Asia. He got a job for consultancy Towers Watson in Hong Kong in their Private Markets research group for three years and then moved to a Japanese bank to work on Private Equity fund investments for one year. It was then that he met his soon-to-be co-founder of Crossfire Arena, Adwin Ho. “We had the idea of bringing Archery Tag, our core product, to Hong Kong. It was then unavailable here and we saw the opportunity to capture the market,” he says, “Entrepreneurship was something I wanted to do eventually, and I felt I had the skills and preparation after several years in the corporate world.”

Telfer has helped Jason build a solid foundation in finance through its curriculum, extracurricular activities, and career centre support (for internships and CFA program resources). He says: “I was able to demonstrate to employers my interest and knowledge. To this day running my own start-up business, I still apply general management knowledge and concepts that I gained from my Telfer years.” The program has directly assisted Jason’s early career path by positioning him in the finance world, and to eventually meet his co-founder.

“Keep focused on your end goal. Everything in between are stepping stones towards your end goal.” This is Jason’s best advice to students about life after graduation. In his case, the stepping stones provide him with the knowledge and know-how to be an entrepreneur and to start his own business.
