“Support those who have contributed to bringing you somewhere,” – words to live by according to Geneviève Bonin, MBA 1996 graduate from the Telfer School of Management and this year’s recipient of the 2015 Telfer Dean’s Philos Award.
Her personal philosophy of paying it forward has informed both her career as well as her strong commitment to community through her volunteer efforts. After serving with the Canadian Armed Forces she knew two things: that she wanted to go back to school and she wanted to continue to serve the public in whatever capacity she could. Her pursuit of further education is what took her to Telfer where she graduated from our Telfer MBA and Reims program. This is also the place she met her husband and the father of her 4 beautiful children.
“I will be forever grateful to the University for bringing key employers on site and introducing me to professional services and getting me my first job,” says Geneviève. Telfer gave her the foot in the door she needed to kick start her career after the military. In addition to being an entrepreneur, owning a chain of Ottawa-based retail stores which she sold in 2010, Geneviève has also spent the last 20 years building a career at PwC where she is today a Partner and leads the Ontario Public Sector practice and the Digital Government practice for the firm.
In addition to her responsibilities as a member of PwC’s Greater Toronto Area Leadership team, she also maintains her various community commitments by serving on many local, national and international boards related to her profession and non-for-profit military organizations. Today, she serves on the Board of the True Patriot Love Foundation and is an active member of the Treble Victor Group. She’s also a champion of the Women in Leadership program at PwC Canada which is dedicated to offering women at the firm mentoring, coaching and practical experience to support their career advancement. Geneviève's experience also includes a number of academic assignments as part-time professor, developing courses and lecturing at the undergraduate and graduate levels at Telfer.
When asked why volunteering and community commitments are important to her, Geneviève says: “My mother dedicated a great part of her life to doing volunteer work. Following her example, I decided to give as much time as I could to causes that I am passionate about including raising awareness around mental and physical health. I do this because I have benefited from the generosity of others, I’ve seen the impact it can have and want to give back.”
As she looks to the future, Geneviève wants to continue to build her team through the guidance and mentorship that has mobilized her through her career and deliver value to her clients. Regardless of where her career takes her, it will always be about doing something that adds to the greater good of society and allows her time to honour her commitment to volunteer work in support of her community while also focusing on her family which is the most important thing in her life.
