Lieutenant-Colonel Patrick Brizay is the Commanding Officer of the Canadian Armed Forces (CF) Health Services Centre Ottawa. He joined the CF as a medical assistant in 1982. While he was a non-commissioned member, he spent most of his career with field units.
His path as an officer began at the University of Ottawa when he was accepted into a program of study that would lead him to become a CF health care administration officer. After he earned his degree, he held several positions in field units and returned to Ottawa to become a staff officer for the CF Surgeon General.
His career led him to be deployed outside of Canada. He served in Cyprus and Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War; he also served in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Afghanistan and commanded the field hospital deployed in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. He developed expertise in operations planning that resulted in his assignment to the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command and the Canadian Joint Operations Command, where he was senior planner, officer in charge of medical support for deployed troops, and operations advisor to the commanding officer.
LCol Brizay had two tours of duty in Afghanistan, the first as a senior staff officer in charge of coordinating medical evacuations for the southern part of that country, and the second as a medical operations advisor in Kabul, where he was tasked with starting the training mission.
On the professional front, he had the privilege of commanding many times. He was commanding officer of 1 Canadian Field Hospital in Petawawa, Ontario, CO of the 8 Wing Trenton Medical Centre in Trenton, Ontario, and CO of the Health Services Centre in Ottawa. He is a graduate of the US Army Medical Center and School AMEDD Officer Advanced Course, which he took at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.
In 2011, LCol Brizay was invested as a Member of the Order of Military Merit by the Governor General of Canada, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, at Rideau Hall. This distinction is given to members of the Canadian Forces for dedication and devotion beyond the call of duty.
LCol Brizay received his Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree with Specialization in Human Resources Management and Management Information Systems from the University of Ottawa in 1997. He is a member of the Canadian College of Health Leaders and has completed the Certified Health Executive (CHE) program. LCol Brizay is currently in a Master’s program in disaster and emergency management at Royal Roads University in Victoria, British Columbia. He finds supporting his alma maters very important. “[Translation] Giving back without any benefits or expectations, with the only reward being a feeling of bringing about positive change and contributing to the next generation.”
