Following his recent success as Vice- President, Business Development, Alain-Michel Sékula has been appointed Vice- President, Strategic Partnerships of the Desjardins Group, one of the largest cooperative financial institutions in the world, with 5.6 million members, $200 billion in assets and 49 000 employees. A senior executive in the field of financial services, Mr. Sékula has a wealth of knowledge to offer about corporate and community governance, business development, sales, project management, strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions, as well as public relations and revenue generation.
As a key player in the field of Bancassurance, Mr. Sékula is one of the few members of the Canadian industry to have progressively acquired years of experience of the areas of life and health insurance, property and casualty insurance, finance and real estate, as well as expertise in direct retail sales of personal insurance and financial services. Due to his expertise, he has recently served in an advisory capacity to both the Federal and Ontario governments.
Mr. Sékula has successively held several executive positions with prestigious companies such as Chubb Insurance, Lloyd's of London, The Guarantee Company of North America, Century 21 International and the Ottawa-Carleton Economic Development Corporation, before returning to Desjardins Financial Security in 1996.
As a seasoned business traveler who has lived and worked in Canada, France and the United States, Mr. Sékula is an ardent proponent of globalization as it applies to financial services. As such, strategic alliances, business partnerships and revenue generation are a part of his everyday life.
Following his humble contribution to the North American Free Trade Agreement, he was named an honorary citizen of the city of Dallas and official president of the Great North American Race, which was held in 1995 and covered the distance between Ottawa and Mexico. Mr. Sékula has also had the unique experience of leading and presenting the City of Ottawa's bid for Expo 2005 to the Bureau International des Expositions in Paris.
Mr. Sékula plays an active role in his community, sitting as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Montfort Hospital in Ottawa. He was also Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the Office des telecommunications éducatives de langue française de l'Ontario (TFO). As well, in recognition of his cooperative and corporate commitment to Desjardins, he was named Vice-President of the Board of Directors of Sigma Assistel, one of the largest assistance companies in Canada, and Vice-President of the Desjardins Financial Services Board. He has also had the privilege of serving as Sr. Vice president of the Board the Quebec Easter Seals organization.
Mr. Sékula is an Ottawa resident and holds multiple degrees in Public Administration and Industrial Relations from the University of Ottawa. He also obtained an MBA from the university and received the designation CMC (Certified Management Consultant) from the Canadian Association of Management Consultants.
