Mike Groves, MBA
Director, Development & Applied Technology, Royal Canadian Mint - Ottawa, ON, Canada

Mike Groves

A professional engineer and graduate of the Telfer School of Management MBA program (2003), Michael has worked in a variety of roles in the forest products industry in both coastal towns of British Columbia and in Gatineau, Québec. He worked over 13 years for AbitibiBowater in roles of increasing responsibility. His experience at AbitibiBowater allowed him to develop expertise in environmental management systems, facility maintenance, business strategies, R&D, and customer service for a large newsprint manufacturing facility.

In 2010, Michael joined the Royal Canadian Mint to lead the Technical Services team. In this role, he managed to the team’s electricians, mechanics, machinists and maintenance management personnel to improve maintenance practices, improve supplier relationships, and increase equipment reliability and performance at the Mint during a period of significant growth. In September 2011, Michael joined the Research & Development team as part of the Mint’s Talent Development Program.

Michael was recently appointed Director, Applied Technologies and Development within the R&D group at the Mint. In this role, Michael is responsible for leading a team dedicated to new technology deployment both the Ottawa and Winnipeg manufacturing facilities. These responsibilities include accelerating the speed to market of new and innovative numismatic, bullion and circulation coinage products. His team also plays a key role at identifying and implementing new technologies to increase productivity, reduce costs, and improve product quality.

“The Telfer MBA at the University of Ottawa taught me the importance of business strategy, collaboration, innovation, project management and product differentiation. I look forward to sharing my career experiences of having worked with leading manufacturing and innovative organizations so that future graduates of the Telfer School of Management will understand the importance of investing in R&D, product differentiation and the continuous improvement of manufacturing processes.”
