As a BCom graduate of 2012, Jamil Bhuya’s success story to date is pretty incredible. As a student entering Telfer for his first year, Jamil hoped to create something big or become someone notable in his future career. With those high hopes, he chose Telfer in order to remain close to his family in Ottawa and to pursue his interests in the field of business. Jamil was a very involved student who took part in clubs and international exchanges in order to connect with his peers and broaden his horizons. After participating in the COOP program, Jamil realized he wanted to be independent in his career and began working on his first big project: launching the now extremely popular restaurant ‘Burgers n’ Fries Forever (BFF)’.

After opening a second BFF location in Ottawa, Jamil hopes to expand the concept to include locations in Toronto. Jamil has received extensive media attention for BFF, being featured on sites such as Huffington Post, Thrillist, Culture Trip, and the Food Network’s series “You Gotta Eat Here”.

Through his years at Telfer, Jamil learned how to be resourceful and how to take action. Because of the demanding course load, he realized that Telfer would set the tone for how we would run his businesses:  to take initiative and accomplish what needs to be done. Jamil’s exchange semester in Amsterdam led him to incorporating cultural aspects into his restaurant concept, a decision which would later prove to be highly beneficial, as it has played a major role in his business’ huge success.

As a student at Telfer, Jamil learned how to coordinate projects and function in a group environment, which he explains has helped him in his business endeavours. As Jamil says, “You learn to work in groups and utilize different new resources. This is what running a business is all about”. One such resource that Jamil takes advantage of is social media platforms such as Instagram, where he has seen huge success with over 28,000 followers of his e-commerce business YLLO. Selling turmeric face masks, the brand has partnered with the organization girlsnotbrides.org  and donates 10% of sales of YLLO to end child marriages around the world. YLLO has been featured in Allure, Brit+Co, GQ, Bustle, Buzzfeed, and Girlboss.

We look forward to seeing where Jamil’s endeavours take him next!
