Charla O'Connor, MBA
President, Usher Group - Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Charla O'Connor

Charla O’Connor is the President of The Usher Group Inc., a Real Estate Brokerage specializing in modern real estate solutions. Most recently Charla has been awarded the Ottawa Business Journal’s Forty under 40 award for her contributions to the community and her business successes.

In 1996, she started a student position with the federal government; Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). In the next couple of years with the CRA, Charla gained experience in Auditing, Accounting, Enforcement, Collections, Client Services, Quality Assurance, and Corporate Reporting. Again looking to do something outside a full time job and exercising, she decided to pursue her Masters Degree. Charla worked on her Graduate degree in the evenings while working full time and in 2004, she had earned a Masters of Business Administration from the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa. By 2006, Charla was managing projects for the Federal Government with annual budgets of over $30 million.

Even though she was slowly building her own real estate property portfolio in the previous few years, in 2007, Charla realized that real estate was in her blood and decided to obtain her real estate license in Ontario. Working with Jeff Usher, formerly of Usher Realty who first hired Charla as a real estate salesperson, they opened The Usher Group Inc. in 2010 and became the exclusive Real Estate Brokerage authorized to work with clients of Grape Vine Home Marketing Consultants Inc. The Usher Group became the first business ever to be advertised on the front page of Grape Vine’s website since its inception in the early 1990s.

Charla, President and Broker of Record, and Jeff grew the business to be a well-known provider of unique and customized real estate offerings.

In the past 5 years, Charla also became the President of an investment portfolio company. With silent partners, this group purchases properties for rent in the Ottawa area. They add a minimum of one property to their portfolio per year. Charla leads the research and assessment element of this company, proposing potential properties to the partners for consideration and then completes the transactions for the desired selections.

In 2013, Charla was nominated for and became an Ottawa Business Journal’s Forty under 40 recipient for her contributions to the community and her business successes. Charla won the Volunteer of the Year award for her extensive work co-running the Jack Charron arena for a few years for the Bell Capital Cup. The past 2 years, Charla has volunteered for all distances of triathlon and Ironman events, completing her own up to the Olympic distance. She plans to train for and complete her first half and full Ironman distances in 2014.

Charla has 18 years under her belt with the CRA and continues to enjoy her job and her wonderful team and colleagues. Outside of that, her goal is to now train another individual in the intricacies of the Broker of Record role within The Usher Group Inc. to free up her time to search out her next big adventure. This will include identifying opportunities within the Ottawa area to give back to the organizations, communities, and individuals who have helped her along the way.
