Michael Burch, BAdm
Managing Partner, Welch LLP - Ottawa, ON, Canada

Michael Burch

Micheal joined the Welch LLP team in 1978 after graduating from the University of Ottawa, where he received his Bachelor of Administration degree. He went on to receive his Chartered Account (CA) designation in 1981 and his Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation thereafter.

As a specialist Micheal initially concentrated in all areas of taxation – corporate and personal. This expertise was subsequently augmented with his extensive exposure to financial and estate planning, as well as cross-border consulting. For a brief time Micheal worked as a controller in the real estate industry. In this role he gained valuable insight into the complications faced by the SME owner.

Micheal was made a partner at Welch LLP in 1993. In 2006, he took over the role of Ottawa office Managing Partner, a role he continues to fulfill. He is also the past-Chairman of the firm-wide Executive Committee.

"The change from, predominately, providing Tax consulting advice to our clients to managing an office – which has now grown to 150 people – has been very challenging. I look forward to seeing our strategic plans realized, our goals achieved and Welch continuing to be a prominent player in the markets we are in."

 Favorite quote/ Words of Wisdom:

"Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense."

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Community involvement: Member of the Dean’s Advisory Board at the Telfer School of Management (University of Ottawa);Trustee and Treasurer of the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame; member of the Ottawa Food Bank –Planned Giving Committee; Member of the National Gallery of Canada Foundation Board of Directors.

Welch LLP – Telfer CO-OP Experience

We are in a profession which requires new and effective staff on a continual basis. Needs vary from year to year but my experience indicates that Welch hires at least four new CO-OP students annually.

The CO-OP program is valuable for these key reasons:

It provides a unique opportunity for both employers and students to gain a better understanding of each other’s roles. From the student’s perspective it provides exposure to the accounting profession coupled with the necessary experience. From an employer’s perspective, we are fortunate to engage educated, dynamic individuals to help service our clients at the appropriate level.

We have been very pleased with the efforts shown by students working at our firm and the overall success of the program. In fact, I am proud to say that many of our Telfer COOP students have gone on to pursue successful, extended careers with Welch LLP.

We are strong supporters of Telfer’s CO-OP program because, quite simply, it works.
