Greg Matthews, EMBA
Branch Manager, RBC Royal Bank - Ottawa, ON, Canada

Greg Matthews

“Relationships matter. Whether they are personal or professional, treat everyone with the respect they deserve.” This is what Greg Matthews, EMBA 2012 and winner of the 2015 Gala of Excellence “Young Achiever’s Award”, says matters to him.

Greg is an active member in the Ottawa community where he promotes and supports the furthering of Canadians’ financial literacy, entrepreneurship and education. He began his career in the financial services sector with RBC Royal Bank in 2004 and has been working directly with local entrepreneurs ever since. Currently he advises clients in the technology sector as a Commercial Banker by helping them grow their businesses by offering banking/financing expertise and connecting them to local professionals.

Greg thanks Professor Peter Koppel for providing him with valuable career advice while he was studying at the Telfer School of Management. As per Koppel’s advice, he completed his undergrad degree part time and found a full time to and finally go on to undertake an EMBA. “Having completed my undergrad and with 6 years of bank experience, I knew I was ready to tackle my MBA,” he says.

Today, Greg continues his passion for teaching financial knowhow that extends beyond the business community. He is a strong advocate for Junior Achievement of Ottawa, both through volunteer delivery of its programs in local schools and by helping to recruit and grow the number of JA volunteers throughout the region. He says: “The Telfer Executive MBA has helped me add capacity to my every day. I am confident that I can achieve my goals given the framework and thought processes the program instils in you.”

Greg, as a proud Telfer graduate, was also President of the Alumni Association for almost four years after graduating. He focused on Alumni activities that promoted professional development, philanthropy and the creation of connections between all graduating years. “I felt the Alumni Association had the potential to be an effective connective tool for graduating EMBA’ers and knew I could help make that happen,” he says.

When asked what type of advice he would provide to students about life after graduation, Greg says continuing to learn and balance are key. “Don’t stop. Find a balance that works for you and your family! This program ingrains a whole new level of capacity that you must continue to harness when the formal learning ends. Stretch yourself, try new things that you didn’t think possible before the program and take the time to reflect on your life learning every day,” he says.

Greg is very thankful of the support, inspiration and guidance his wife Danielle (Telfer EMBA, 2014) has provided him over the years. Together, they have created a foundation based on a focus of continued education, financial literacy and striving for a balanced lifestyle.
